W Hotel Opens Today

The W Hotel, located in the former Hotel Washington Space, is set to open today. On top of what looks like fabulous rooms and amazing amenities (check out the P.A.W.S. program just for kicks, where visitors' four-legged friends will receive treats, toys, dog sitting and walking services, and more), the city is also gaining a new steakhouse, the reincarnation of the space's rooftop bar, and DC's first Bliss Spa.

Daily Candy has more on the J&G Steakhouse and POV bar, and the Bliss Spa is already accepting appointments. So go ahead and book that mani and pedi, and follow it up with a custom cocktail and some lounging on the hotel's rooftop.

Relaxation and luxury at their finest, for sure.

Pete's Apizza Begins Delivery Today

Great news for Washingtonians who live near Pete's New Haven Style Apizza: the restaurant begins their delivery service today. Prince of Petworth has the scoop on the delivery range, which has apparently been expanded past the original point of Sherman and now to Georgia Avenue (be sure to check out the Google map on PoP, which visually defines the delivery area).

You can follow Pete's Apizza on Twitter to get updates on their delivery service as they work out any kinks in the first week or two. Note that there's a $20 minimum on delivery orders, as well as a $3 delivery fee per address. The menu can be found here.

Beer, Putt Putt and Gelato, Among Other Things

Because I'm in the middle of packing up my apartment and moving to the other side of the river (yes, my friends, I'm heading out of DC and back to my lovely home state of Virginia), I probably won't have the time to dedicate to blogging over the next week or so. That said, here are some fun links that should keep you busy for a bit:
  • Like beer? Putt putt golf? Then you'll love H Street Country Club. It opens tonight in -- where else -- the Atlas district. Check out Prince of Petworth's review and rundown from the media preview here.
  • If you're watching your wallet (and with these economic times, who isn't?), this list of 15 things to do in DC under $15 from Daily Candy is fantastic. Ceiba's late-night happy hour is on my to-do list, and I've always been a fan of the $1 movie nights at Arlington Cinema and Drafthouse. If you have other ideas for soaking up DC culture on the cheap, leave them in the comments section.
  • Want to beat the heat with some frozen goodness? Check out two new gelato spots in the city: Potenza Bakery at 14th and H and Pitango Gelato at 14th and P.

Cleveland Park Magruder's to Close

Sad news: the Magruder's in Cleveland Park is closing this Saturday, May 23rd. Apparently (and no surprise here) the rising rent is forcing the store to shut its doors.

Luckily, we'll still have other grocery stores in the neighborhood -- like the Brookville Market and the Giant in Van Ness -- but I'm sad to see Magruder's go.

Thanks to Urban Turf for the info!

If you’re in search of a really great cupcake….

…you’ll need to look beyond the cute cafes with art deco decor and the ones whose treats come in boxes tied with various shades of grosgrain ribbon. The best cupcake yet, actually, isn’t even surrounded by four walls: it’s at the Old Town Alexandria farmer’s market.

With all the cupcakeries setting up shop around the city, I’ve certainly consumed my fair share of cupcakes. I have no complaints; in fact, they’ve all been quite good. But I have yet to bite into a cupcake that could truly move the bite-sized dessert needle from “These are fun to have every so often” to “If I’m not careful, I might gain ten pounds.”

Until now, that is.

It’s totally worth the drive to Alexandria to visit Chateau Gateau, Sarina Luangkhot’s umbrella-covered cupcake stand. Sarina was nice enough to give me six cupcakes to sample, but I have no doubt that I’ll be back to the market to purchase more very soon.

What makes these cupcakes so great? Besides the fact that Sarina uses all organic ingredients and local produce, her creations taste better and are fresher than others, and they also have a touch of homemade-ness to them. Unlike other cupcake shops where the philosophy seems to be “the more sugar, the better,” Sarina’s combinations of cake and icing flavors are deliciously satisfying but won’t leave you feeling like you consumed an entire sheet cake. I love the fact that she doesn’t go overboard with icing, a cupcake no-no that several other shops fall victim to with certain creations.

One of these Saturdays, wake up a little earlier than normal and head to the farmer’s market for Sarina’s fabulous cupcakes. I didn’t have a chance to sample all the flavors, but the Peter Peter (pumpkin chocolate chip cake with a chocolate ganache frosting) and the Ya Mon (coconut cake with double cream frosting and a sprinkle of coconut) are highly addictive.

Cupcakes are $2 each or $10 for a half dozen. Catering’s available, too.

DC's Best Rooftop Bars

There's no better way to take in the last few days of summer than sipping cocktails while gazing out over all the city. Not sure where to go? Our friends at Metromix Washington DC compiled this list of the best rooftop bars, which includes spots like Cleveland Park Bar & Grill and Local 16. (I'm a big fan of Ardeo's rooftop, but you probably need to order more than just a drink to lounge in this space.)

Have a favorite that's not listed here? Leave your bar of choice in the comments section.
